Hats off to Uncle Benny

The hats this year will be green for the “loopers” and white for the “flytraps” and are donated by Uncle Benny.
Thanks to Benny Martin for the generous gift.

Tournament History

A few years ago two friends who had caddied and worked on the greens crew of a local golf club were reminiscing about those bygone days and deeds. After a few chuckles and beers, they decided to revive a caddy tournament previously held 30 or so years earlier.

You see, the original event had been  played as a memorial for one of the older caddies who, much to their chagrin, they later discovered was still alive and rather annoyed at their presumptuous behavior.

Hence the 30 year hiatus.

Determined to get it right this time, they held the revived event in late November 2007 with but 16 hardy souls. A hat was passed and a small Donation was offered to the Burke Scholarship Fund.

Last summer, the event was reprised with an expanded field and an official name:  The Jim Tanner Caddy Classic. The event honors the very-much-alive legendary caddymaster who has graced the hallowed links of Pawtucket Country Club with his wit and presence for over 50 years.

This year the tournament will be further expanded and former “loopers” from coast-to-coast have expressed their enthusiastic interest in returning to “The Bucket” to participate and support the endowment of the new James Tanner Burke Fund Scholarship.

The Jim Tanner Caddy Classic will be held at Pawtucket Country Club in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on Monday, July 6, 2009.

The tournament is a unique and special way to honor Jim Tanner, the long time caddie master at the club. Last year sixty-eight club members and former caddies competed in the tournament, with all proceeds going to the RIGA’s Burke Scholarship program. The event raised $1,300.
